About

The Southwest Louisiana Independence Center (SLIC) provides the following services to disabled/handicapped adults: 1) Information and Referral: SLIC serves as a referral source answering specific questions from consumers and the general public about disability issues and referrals to other service providers 2) Independent Living and Skills Training: SLIC works with consumers to teach and practice skills that will increase their independence such as nutrition, menu-planning, cooking, homemaking, self-care, health care, money management and other daily need skills) 3) Peer Counseling: SLIC shares disability-related experiences, knowledge and skills in patient’s home. They also provide sharing of opinions, feelings, problems and solutions. 4) Advocacy: Provides support and information concerning legal and civil rights available, benefits and housing accessibility issues for persons with disabilities. Also provides technical assistance to any business regarding Americans with Disability Act compliance issues. 5) Computer Skills Training: The basics of using a computer. Also, how to make special projects (cards, calendar, web pages) on the computer. 6) Personal Care Assistance Medicaid Waiver program: Administered by SLIC provides personal care attendant services (maximum of 35 hours per week) to people with disabilities in a seventeen parish area of Southwest Louisiana. All applicants must be between the age of 18 and 55, have a documented disability and need help with personal care tasks such as bathing and cooking. *Please Note: they cannot provide transportation. 7) Assistive Technology Program: Provides equipment to low-income disabled adults who need equipment such as wheelchairs, ramps, home modifications, etc. There is a waiting list and funding is through state grants.
