SMILE provides emergency food and medical assistance, counseling and referral services, emergency crisis assistance programs including weatherization, commodity food program, emergency utility assistance, transportation (there is a $6 charge in Iberia Parish, $8 in Lafayette an $10 for wheelchair (in or out of the parish)); if client has the Medicaid card, they must go through Medical Dispatch and Medicaid will pay for trip charges for medical appointments), and other services. The office also is an enrollment center for Medicaid. Transportation is available to Lafayette. SMILE New Iberia Family Shelter provides housing for single parents or married couples with dependents for a maximum of four to six months. Four families with 5-6 children are housed.
