Sager Brown is part of the United Methodist Church and serves residents of St. Mary parish through the following programs: ADULT COMPUTER CLASSES – in Windows 98, Excel 2000 and WordPerfect 2000. Classes are offered in the evening to anyone 18 years or older with a desire to learn more about computers. The class meets once a week for 10 weeks with a certified instructor. Upon completion of the class each participant receives a certificate from UMCOR Sager Brown. Classes are $100 per class. HOUSING REHABILITATION – Is a program for St. Mary parish residents who live in unsafe, unsecured, and unsanitary housing due to storm damage, termites, normal decay and their inability to afford the cost of repairs and normal up keep. UMCOR Sager Brown has repaired over 3,500 homes and built 21 new ones in St. Mary parish. The survival of this valuable program depends upon the contribution it receives from it’s volunteers. Handicapped, Senior citizens and single parent households are top priority. There is a waiting list. Application is required and recipient’s financial help is required. PARENTING CLASSES – are offered and designed to teach today’s parents active parenting skills. Parents are taught how to recognize their children’s needs, ways to help their children fill those needs, how to instill courage, self esteem, responsibility, and cooperation in their children, and how to enjoy being a parent. The course is taught by an instructor who has worked for the Louisiana State Office of Community Services for 33 years and are $50 per family. GIRLS CLUB – is specially designed to assist and encourage girls ages 12-18 years old in making correct and positive decisions on education, peer pressure, family matters, hobbies, and studying the Bible. The purpose of the program is to help young ladies develop a positive attitude about life and learn to sit and work toward achieving personal goals that will be productive now and in the future. There is no fee for this program and the contact person is Karen Provost. FOOD FOR SENIORS/MOMS – this is a federally funded commodity supplemental food program designed to provide nutritious food to low income seniors, mothers with babies up to 1 year old, and children 13 months to 6 years old. Once a month each eligible person receives a 40lb food package containing canned milk, meat, fruits or vegetables, cereals, fruit juices, potatoes, rice or pasta, and beans and peanut butter. Seniors must be 60 years or older and meet income guidelines. Families – new moms for one year and children from 13 months to the 6th birthday. Application required.
